In this training, you learn how to safely measure concentrations of hazardous substances, explosion risk and oxygen, measure to report the measurement results and to interpret them.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Be at least 18 years old
• Identification possible by means of an identity card, passport or driving licence
• Have a basic knowledge of hazardous substances
• The participant masters the language of the exams

TARGET GROUP

Employees who have to perform, interpret and report EX-OX-TOX measurements on a company site. For employees working in the (petro)chemical industry, this exam must be taken in an accredited centre.

OBJECTIVE

Learning to measure, in an effective and safe manner, concentrations of hazardous substances, explosion risk and oxygen, and to report and interpret the measurement results.

• Knowing the basic concepts of substances hazardous to health, fire and explosion
• Knowing basic concepts such as asphyxiation due to oxygen deficiency and the effects of a too high or too low oxygen concentration;
• Being able to carry out EX-OX-TOX measurements;
• Correctly using and operating measuring equipment and aids;
• Interpreting measurements and drawing conclusions;
• Reporting measurements.

• A full day of training lasts 7 hours by default, unless otherwise stated
• Theoretical explanation with practical exercises
• Theory exam
  • Max 60 minutes
  • Consists of 40 multiple-choice questions
  • The participant must achieve 70% to pass
• Practical exam
  • Max 45 minutes
• Every participant who passes receives the Besacc-VCA diploma IS-013: measuring and detecting hazardous substances (EX-OX-TOX)
• The diploma is person-bound and states the high-risk task for which the participant has passed
• The diploma is valid for 3 years and is registered online at http://besacc.epyc.eu/diploma

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA THEORY

The candidate can:

• Explain basic concepts
• Explain what confined spaces are, under which conditions they may be entered and what this means for the measurements
• Special features when freeing up a space or equipment
• Relationship between vol %, ppm and mg/m3
• Influence of oxygen on the measuring equipment
• Explain the regulations concerning hazardous substances
• Be able to perform an LMRA
• Explain measuring procedures
• Explain measuring principles
• Calibrate measuring devices
• Name the importance of the timing, the locations of the measurements and the frequency
• Elements that can influence the measurement
• Interpret and correctly record measurement results
• Explain working with personal monitors

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA PRACTICE

• Look up the important basic concepts of a hazardous substance and explain what these basic concepts mean in relation to measuring. This is done using the chemical cards or other information sheets, e.g. MSDS sheets.
• Determine, based on the explosion and oxygen measurements, whether a confined space is suitable to be entered.
• Requirements for the mobile measuring device EX-OX combination, which is in good condition:
  • Inspected and calibrated
  • LEL sensor: catalytic
  • Oxygen sensor: electrochemical
  • Sampling hose and probe present
• Gas tubes: look up some important data in the instructions for use of the gas measuring tubes, in the language of the operator
• Carry out a measurement with gas measuring tubes of the concentration of a specific substance hazardous to health, which is made known, in a vessel
• Carry out a measurement with a PID meter of the concentration of a specific substance hazardous to health, which is made known, in a vessel
