ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Be at least 18 years old
• Identification possible by means of an identity card, passport or driving licence
• Have a declaration of medical fitness
• The participant has command of the language of the examinations

• Persons who hold a certificate for professional divers (e.g. underwater welders) issued by a diving school that is a member of the 'International Diving Schools Association' (IDSA) or the 'International Marine Contractors Association' (IMCA) are exempt from the high-risk task IS-082, provided it can be demonstrated that the last logged dive was less than 5 years ago (see diving logbook) and provided they meet the above-mentioned admission requirements.

TARGET GROUP

Employees who have to work with independent non-autonomous respiratory protection on a company site, in installations, workshops, etc. where the oxygen concentration in the ambient air may be too low, and/or where excessively high concentrations of substances hazardous to health are present.

For employees who work in the (petro)chemical industry, this examination must be taken in a recognised centre. Employees who are able to work with independent respiratory protection are assumed to also be able to work with dependent respiratory protection.

OBJECTIVE

Learning to work effectively and safely with independent non-autonomous respiratory protection, which includes among other things:

• Checking the respiratory protection equipment;
• Putting on and taking off the equipment in the correct manner and with the necessary checks;
• Carrying out work with independent respiratory protection
• Responding correctly to emergency situations

• A full training day lasts 7 hours by default, unless otherwise stated
• Theoretical introduction (30%) with many practical exercises (70%)
• Theory examination
• Practical examination
• Every successful participant receives the Besacc-VCA diploma IS-082: working with independent non-autonomous respiratory protection
• This examination also integrates the assessment criteria and points of attention of AV-004 - Slinging and directing non-critical loads geïntegreerd
• The diploma is personal and states the high-risk task for which the participant has passed
• The diploma is valid for 5 years and is registered online at http://besacc.epyc.eu/diploma

THEORY ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

• How respiration works
• The candidate can situate and explain the independent respiratory protection equipment (field of application, operation and limitations)
• Interpreting the basic legislation
• Recognising and naming the risks
• Naming the factors that influence the level of protection
• Carrying out an LMRA
• Explaining the construction, operation and limitations of the various components of the independent respiratory protection equipment
• Explaining the points of attention when using a hose connection (cylinder battery, breathing air network)
• Naming the advantages and disadvantages of a breathing apparatus and of breathing air via a fixed breathing air line
• The candidate can explain how respiratory protection equipment must be maintained, checked, prepared and used

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

• Preparing the breathing apparatus for use.
• Connecting an independent respiratory protection device to a breathing air line.
• Carrying out simple work with breathing equipment.
• Responding to emergency situations, such as:
  • Fire or gas alarm
  • Colleague in panic
  • Problem with own device
• Indicating the different types and the field of application of the various dependent respiratory protection devices, choosing the correct type and putting it on correctly.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

Breathing apparatus:
a) workers who run the risk of poisoning or a disorder of the respiratory organs through the inhalation of dust, gases, vapours, smoke or mist;
b) workers who may be exposed to carcinogenic and mutagenic agents:
− during the work in which exposure cannot be avoided by preventive measures as provided for in articles VI.2-4, VI.2-5, VI.2-7 and VI.2-8;
− during work, such as maintenance work, demolition work, renovation work, conversion work for which exposure to these agents can be foreseen, notwithstanding the organisational measures or collective preventive measures taken;" (Codex Book IX, Title 2)
